A Must Read!

Just got this great book in the mail. Thanks to Jonathon Johnson for posting it on his blog several weeks ago. I feel like I need to pay Jonathon since I got it for free. :)

You need to get this book! I just started reading it yesterday and the information is incredible insite into the minds of the people we are trying to reach. The homework has been done. You may not agree with the opinions of the outsiders, but it will give you a heads up on the way unchurched people think. This book is not about letting unchurched people tell us how to do church, but we do need to understand them if we are going to meet them where they are!

Got my copy a week ago (thanks to Jon). It is a good read. I agree they have some interesting facts concerning peeps we are too trying to reach. Good stuff!!! Heck it was free.

I wanted to add... One thing it points out about the generation at hand is that they will tell you what you want to hear (its almost like Mexico). This is the main factor that I have discussed in previous posts concerning praying a little prayer. Many people will pray a little prayer to get you out of their hair! The only way to ensure a genuine salvation experience is to follow-up and attempt to teach and make followers.

How do you guys feel about the following excerpt (an observation of younger believers) from page 35...

“They are also sensitive to the way in which Christians engage a broken world and are often frustrated by the poor image that Christianity has. We heard many young believers say that in some circumstances they are reluctant to admit they are Christians. They don’t fear being unpopular, but they feel that raising the Christian flag would actually undermine their ability to connect with people and to maintain credibility with them. This is a major indictment of unChristian faith, that to bring those around them closer to Christ, they must distance themselves from the current “branding” of Christianity. They have to put aside unChristian ways of doing things to connect people with the depth and power of the Christian message.”

I often find myself apologizing for the attitude of Christianity or more specifically the Baptist way or saying something like, “well, its really not supposed to be this way, but…” This is a real issue that we’ve got to deal with!

This book reminds me a lot of Dan Kimball's book "They Like Jesus But Not The Church" and has a new book coming out called "They Like Jesus But Not The Church".... both refer to the attitudes discussed in the unChristian book.
